January in the gardens
In our zone 7 gardens, January has brought some well enjoyed snow! We still have patches of white on the ground and the temperatures won’t be above freezing for several days. It’s too cold to be productive outside, so we are spending the days preparing for the spring and a busy growing season. We are selecting new perennial, vegetables, and annual varieties to add to the gardens. There are new benches for spring potting and a new greenhouse will soon provide additional growing space. We are prepping for a busy spring at the local farmers markets with vegetables and flowers.
While it’s cold outside the indoor plants are growing strong, creating vibrant, green spaces that brighten winter days! We have lots of propagations that will soon be ready for potting - philodendrons, hoyas, and pothos are rooting now. Alocasias and monstera are growing strong in the greenhouse, even though its cold outside.
